## More than one Path to the Right Answer

Here are three different ways to answer question 6b from paper 2 of the 2013 ordinary level leaving cert maths paper. The first two are the typical type of answers given in the marking schemes and most classrooms, but I prefer the third. Which do you prefer?

Advantages of the third way include better visual clarity and less writting required.

The |∠ ABQ| notation becomes more difficult to follow when many angles are involved. The eye has to follow the lines from the point A to B to Q to see the angle.

The ∠ ❋  notation allows the angle to be recognised more quickly and is not distracted by
following from point to point.

The ∠ ABQ requires an extra two characterts to be written every time an angle is referred to compared to the ∠ ❋ version.
If just doing a single short question the requirment for extra characters will not make much difference but over a complete exam paper it may make a difference.
Version 1 requires 34 more characters than if a single letter or symbol is used for each angle.
Version 2 requires 48 more characters than if a single letter or symbol is used for each angle.
Version 3 above would require 36 more characters if the ∠ ABQ were used.
