All is not lost if you did not get the grade you wanted in your Leaving Cert Maths exam. A number of colleges offer a lifeline in the form of a special maths entrance exam, providing a second chance to students to meet the particular entry requirements for certain courses.
The exams vary between the colleges, and some colleges also run preparatory courses to help students learn what to expect. Fees may be payable in some cases while other courses are free. All information is available on the relevant college websites.
Here is a guide to what is on offer
An exam reflecting the actual maths requirements of CIT programmes, specifically for applicants who have applied through the CAO for CIT.
Exams will be held on Tuesday, August 20: Paper 1 (compulsory for all) is set at ordinary level, and Paper 2 at higher level.
An exam for applicants to its Level 8 (honours) engineering programmes that require a minimum higher level C3 in the Leaving Cert. The standard is similar to the Leaving Cert higher level exam.
The exam will be held on Wednesday, August 21, in DIT, Kevin Street. The college is offering tutorials on Monday, August 19, and Tuesday, August 20.
An exam will take place on Wednesday, August 21, a pass in which fulfils the maths entry requirement for its engineering and IT programmes.
The standard is between higher and ordinary level, so a Leaving Certificate ordinary level candidate may choose to sit it. A five-day preparatory course starts tomorrow, August 15.
An exam for students who wish to pursue a degree in engineering but don’t have the required Leaving Cert higher level C3, will take place on Friday, August 23, based on Leaving Cert higher level Paper 1.
Students who have not applied for engineering on NUIM may still do so using the CAO’s Vacant Places procedure.
An exam for students who did not achieve the necessary grade for the Faculty of Science and Engineering degrees will take place on Thursday, August 22.
There are two versions of the paper available, one at ordinary level and one at higher level.
An exam for students who have already applied for a course at WIT (except nursing or B Eng Electronic Engineering) will take place on Friday, August 30.
It will be equivalent to Leaving Certificate ordinary level Paper 1. Depending on demand, a revision course will run from August 23 to 28 in Waterford College of Further Education.
